Crochet

My aunt taught me to knit back in the 1970's and I did many items with her.  i.e.  afghans, slippers, hats, scarfs and mittens.  Back then, we used the 'Workbasket' magazine that she would get once a month in the mail.  There was no video's to watch or google to search for a free pattern.  You would go to the local dime store where they sold yarn and supplies.  I remember standing looking for through the flyers or books for a pattern that I thought was EASY enough for me to tackle.  Then I would have to buy the book.  There were no free patterns.  My how technology has put this info at our fingertips, like so many other things it has done.

In the late 70's I got married and did a couple afghans and then I thought crocheting looked so much better so I taught myself, through a written pattern, how to crochet.  So glad I did.  I did a few more afghans before the personal computer came into our home and then the crocheting went by the wayside.

I had made an afghan for both of children and when venturing out on their own, they took these with them. A few years ago, my son, broguht his to me and asked that I fix a hole in it where the yarn came unraveled.  I was able to fix it with little trouble.

My oldest grandson asked me, probably 4 maybe 5 years ago if I would make him an afghan.  We went out and got the yarn, dark camo , and I began it and got about 3 feet done to it, then it sat for many months.  Finished it up last year.  I am sure he thought I would never get it done.

This year, my daughter, brought hers out and wanted to know if I could fix the hole that was in hers.  Well, that one was not so easy.  It was a granny square with about 3 inches of border.  The hole was in a square and it has been cut.  Had to tear out 3 " of border and recreate a new border.  I could not match the colors as it is 22 years old.  She seemed happy, just couldn't part with it because of the memories.

So, this has gotten me back into the crocheting mode and not so much with the computers.  But I do use the computers to search for free patterns and to see what other crocheters have done.  It gives me ideas maybe.  Some of the work is just not for me.  I had an afghan in the drawer that I started maybe 12 years and never finished.  It was a little more on the difficult side and so I thought I would try and finish it.  Couldn't find the pattern, so I tore it out and made a simple granny stitch with the yarn and gave it to my daughter to add to her collection of mom-made afghans.
